Training Contract 2015 Applications

January 19th, 2015

Trainee Solicitor, Simon Wright, offers some guidance to applicants when making their Training Contract applications

From my own past experiences, I know that filling out an application for a Training Contract can sometimes feel daunting and time-consuming.  The reality is that securing a Training Contract is as competitive as ever and the recruitment process can be extremely rigorous.  This shouldn’t be a surprise to many.  But if you tailor your application properly and do your research, you can achieve success.

A Training Contract application is a very important indicator to a prospective law firm of the type of person you are, what you can offer and why they should take you seriously.  So, how can you make your application as interesting and appealing as possible?

The first question to ask yourself is: why am I applying to this firm?  It may be fairly obvious, but what do you know about the firm and why are you interested in its Training Contract?  Research the firm properly and think carefully about why this is the firm you want to invest two years of your life to.  Don’t just complete the application as if it was the hundredth application you had made.  Think carefully about why the firm is right for you and what you can bring to the role.  Therefore, you can tailor your application to the firm as much as you can, making it as personal and interesting as possible.

You should use your application to showcase the one thing firms are interested most about – you.  It is a great opportunity to show off your personality and who you are.  What motivates you?  Do you have interests outside your vocation which you are committed to or care passionately about?  If so, mention them in your application.  It is not about answering the questions the way you think the firm would like them to be answered – show the things that make you unique and stand out from other applicants.

Lastly, take your time with completing your application.  Do not rush.  Always proof-read your application thoroughly afterwards and think about how it reads.  Does it look presentable?  Have you been professional?  On first glance an application can give the recipient a good opinion on the type of person you are.  It can be like meeting you for the first time – you want to make a good first impression.
