Our history

We first opened for business on 1st September 1983.

The firm was founded by Alan Lennon, who initially set up as a sole practitioner providing a range of litigation services. Alan recruited Andy Coyle as his first articled clerk in August 1988, after two summers working as a student at the firm. Andy qualified as a solicitor in 1990, and was appointed as the firm’s second partner a year later.

Andy developed his skills in non-contentious legal work – first conveyancing, will drafting and probate, then moving into commercial property and company work. Alan continued to develop the litigation practice, in particular family and personal injury. Together it gave the firm a good balance of legal expertise.

In 1994 the firm moved to Broadway Court in Chesham, where we still are today. In 1998 we acquired the Amersham-based firm of Wainwrights, when principal Jill Wainwright retired to become a judge. Wainwrights had mainly worked in family law, as well as conveyancing, wills and probate. Lennon & Co and Wainwrights were reorganised, with the family department concentrated in Chesham and specialist conveyancing in Amersham. Jenny Russell, a former partner at Wainwrights, now heads our family services. The former partnership of Lennon & Co incorporated in 2011 as Lennons Solicitors Limited.

Since Andy Coyle’s appointment in 1988, we’ve regularly recruited aspiring young lawyers who’ve developed into key people at our firm and elsewhere. Three of our current directors and two of our current solicitors trained with us. Our ethos has always been to serve our clients with skill, tenacity and good humour, and to provide a platform for talented people to learn, develop and flourish. It’s an ethos that we’ve grown over thirty years – and one that we’ll continue to build on in the future.
